Copyright and the Classroom

   
      Today I'd like to discuss the importance of Copyright laws and understanding how they work. Many items are easily accessible online such as images, articles, and videos, but often times we don't think about Copyright or how to cite these items properly when we want to use them. Although Copyright laws may seem detailed and complicated, I believe it would be most important to teach students how to identify which sources are safe to use. For example, if students or teachers want to use a YouTube video for a class project or presentation, always look for the "CC" citation associated with the video. This "CC" stands for the "Creative Common" license that allows distribution. Students also use online images often for both personal and educational purposes, so it is important for students to know how to properly cite these online images.
