Genius Hour Reflection

Now that I have decided on my Genius Hour topic, I'm starting to dig a bit deeper to see what I can find. I'd like to take this opportunity to share my thoughts so far, and eventually see where it takes me.

First, it might be helpful if I explain the concept of Genius Hour to give you a better idea of my project. Essentially, Genius Hour is designed to give students an opportunity to study a topic of their choice during class. Students are given the freedom to create their own goals and work independently to accomplish them. The following video goes into further detail about Genius Hour, so feel free to check it out if you're interested in learning more about it.

My Genius Hour question is "How does the music you listen to affect your mood?". As a music major, I felt inclined to choose a music related topic and I'm actually very excited about this. I believe that music can have a large impact on mood, but I'd also like to explore several different areas of music exposure and how it can affect us.

Right now I'm trying to focus on the relationship between music and video. For example, watching a short clip of a man falling could cause an audience to experience several different emotions depending on the style of background music. With the use of silly, goofy music, this clip would come across as comical and possibly cause an audience to laugh. However, the same clip could be displayed with intense, scary music to cause a fearful emotions in the viewer.

There are so many other examples and aspects in which music can affect mood, but I wanted to start with something a little basic and somewhat obvious. I can't wait to explore this topic further and I have a lot of ideas flowing! Check back soon to see what I come up with.
